So let's talk about my history with Beast Wars a little bit. I, like a lot of guys who grew up with the original Transformers cartoon, was not a Beast Wars fan at first. I specifically remember seeing the toys on the shelf at KMart or some other department store and thinking "Transformers that turn into animals? That's dumb." In retrospect, I think my real problem with them was that they didn't turn into robotic-looking animals. I had never had a problem with any of the blocky, boxy G1 animal Transformers. And, in fact, when the Transmetals Beast Wars line debuted, with more robotic beast modes, I suddenly thought "Hey, these look kinda neat." Eventually I watched the cartoon as well, and kicked myself for not getting into the series from the beginning. I'm a big fan of the show and the characters now.
The Beast Wars characters were very challenging for me to simplify into a super-deformed style. Even now I don't know if I ever really got a handle on them. The toys and TV designs were far more complex than G1 Transformers.
